We depart from the Christchurch Helicentre and fly across the picturesque Garden City, enjoying panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains and the Port Hills. Crossing over the ancient volcanic crater that is now Lyttelton Harbour, we proceed over to Bank?s Peninsula. This island like promontory is named for Joseph Banks, the naturalist who first caught sight of the area in 1779 while voyaging with Captain Cook on the ?Endeavour?.
We fly around the outside of the Peninsula, viewing rugged rocky cliffs and the Pacific Ocean, wide beaches, culminating in a landing and picnic on an isolated beach.
Although we are only 15 minutes from the city of Christchurch, the feeling is one of being far from the crowds. It is not uncommon on this flight to find dolphins swimming close to the coastline ? cameras are a must for this flight. With a wine tasting option, this flight is ideal for those whose time is limited, or who just need to get away from it all.
